Keep seeing people say they got "rekt" - what does that actually mean?

Hey everyone, I'm pretty new to trading and following crypto spaces online. I keep seeing people in comments and forums say they got "rekt" on a trade. From the context, it seems bad, but I'm not entirely sure what it specifically refers to. Is it just losing money, or is there a more specific meaning in crypto? What kind of situation actually qualifies as getting rekt?

Welcome! That's a great question because "rekt" is one of those essential, hard-learned pieces of crypto slang. It's more severe than just a regular loss. "Rekt" (derived from "wrecked") specifically means being financially devastated or wiped out by a bad trade or investment. It's the ultimate "I told you so" for taking on catastrophic risk. It usually happens in a few classic ways: using excessive leverage (borrowed money to trade) so that a small price drop liquidates your entire position; FOMO-buying at the very top of a hype cycle just before a crash; or holding a volatile altcoin through a 90%+ collapse. The term captures that brutal feeling of a total, often avoidable, financial wreck. Its a communal warning. The Paybis glossary has a good breakdown of it, including its origins in gaming culture. Here's the link if you want the full definition and common scenarios: paybis.com/blog/glossary/what-is-rekt/. Consider learning what "rekt" means as a free first lesson in risk management!
